Having retired as an assassin for a secret organization, Eastwood leads a simple existence as an art history professor at a university. Blackmailed by the unscrupulous head of the organization, he agrees to perform one final "sanction." The victim's identity is not known, but he will be one of the three men attempting to scale the Eiger, a brutal mountain in the Swiss Alps. Eastwood, a famous climber, will have to kill him during the excursion. The icy, treacherous climb up the Eiger is depicted in brutally realistic and thrilling ways.

• The screenplay was adapted from the 1973 best-seller by Trevanian.
• A British stuntman, David Knowles, was killed by a boulder on the second day of shooting. Clint had been in the same position minutes earlier.
• Clint went on a three day climbing course in Yosemite National Park, then practiced what he'd learned back in Carmel for several months.
• Clint did all his own climbing on location, without resorting to any studio shots or fake backdrops. The only stunt he did not perform was a 2,500 foot drop, for which he used a dummy.
