Eastwood is at it again as Dirty Harry. In this one he is teamed with Daly, after his regular sidekick Mitchum is stabbed by a pimp turned terrorist. Eastwood and Daly uncover a terrorist organization that has been amassing ammunition and explosives. The group abducts the mayor of San Francisco and holds him for a huge ransom. Eastwood goes undercover, pretending to be a tourist visiting a nude massage parlor, then visiting a black militant headquarters and other unsavory sites of the city to turn up evidence leading to the terrorist ring. He and Daly finally learn that the mayor is being held on deserted Alcatraz Island, and they attempt to free him.

• The writers of the original screenplay didn't know how to get the script to Eastwood, so they left it at The Hog's Breath Inn, Clint's Carmel restaurant.
• The film was originally (and unimaginatively) called "Dirty Harry III".
• In 1980 a writer sued Clint for plagiarism, accusing him of taking the title of the film from one of his works. Clint maintained that he was inspired by the Humphrey Bogart film The Enforcer (which was also owned by Warner Bros). The case was dismissed.
• This was Tyne Daly's first major screen role. She reckons this film made her career, and went on to star in Cagney and Lacey.
• The film was made as part of a deal made with Warner Bros when Malpaso moved there from Universal (partly on account of the studio tour going right past the office door).
