Plot
In the middle of the Depression, alcoholic country singer Red Stovall (Clint Eastwood) moves in with his sister's family on their western farm. Red's young nephew, Whit (played by Clint's son, Kyle Eastwood), becomes his dissolute uncle's protector, accompanying him to Nashville for a Grand Ole Opry audition. Joining the duo on their trouble-fraught journey are Whit's grandpa (John McIntire) and another aspiring singer, Marlene (Alexa Kenin).

Trivia
  • This is one of only two films in which Eastwood has died (the other being The Beguiled; not including The Bridges of Madison County where technically at the end of this film Clint's character has passed on).
  • Although there was no part for Sondra Locke in this film, she acted as Kyle Eastwood's acting coach.
  • Following this film, Kyle tried for the title role in The Karate Kid, but lost out to Ralph Macchio. He is now working as a professional musician.
  • The opening scenes almost exactly mirror those of The Outlaw Josey Wales - a man ploughing a field with his son hears the noise of approaching destruction.
  • Legendary country and western singer Marty Robbins recorded the title song of the film, but died of a heart attack shortly before the film opened.
