Plot

Butch Haynes (Costner) and a companion break out of a Texas prison and, after a tense confrontation with a terrified family, make off with 7-year-old Phillip Perry (T.J. Lowther) as a hostage. Hot on their heels are a team that includes Eastwood, as grizzled Texas Ranger Red Garnett, and Laura Dern, as inexperienced but independent criminologist Sally Gerber. The film revolves around their pursuit as well as the relationship that builds between Costner and the boy.

Trivia
  • This was the first film since Where Eagles Dare and Paint Your Wagon in 1969 for which Clint did not receive top billing, which went instead to Kevin Costner.
  • The Governor of Texas, who lends the silver trailer to Red Garnett, must be John Connolly, who would be hit by a bullet a couple of weeks later in the assassination of JFK.
  • Clint's connection with "Casper the Friendly Ghost" is not restricted to the Halloween costume worn by "Phillip" - a couple of years later he had a cameo in the film version of the cartoon, Casper.
  • Again Clint contributed to the score by composing the theme on the .mp3ophone record.
