Wes Block (Clint Eastwood) is a New Orleans police detective on the trail of a vicious killer who has been slaying the prostitutes and massage parlor girls who work the French Quarter. Surprisingly, the murderer and Wes have something in common: they both enjoy the kinky services of the working girls of New Orleans. As he begins to learn more about the killer, he realizes that there are similarities between himself and his quarry. Eastwood's performance is one of his best.

- Richard Tuggle, who had written the screenplay for Escape from Alcatraz, wrote the script and made his directorial debut.
- There were suggestions for the first time that Eastwood would receive an Oscar nomination, and there was some surprise when he didn't.
- The film marked the debut of Clint's twelve year-old daughter Alison. She is now working as a model.
- Alison Eastwood was stalked in 1989 by a New Zealander, Mike Joynson, who became obsessed after seeing her in the film.
