The Beguiled

(1971)

PLOT | TRIVIA | CAST | CREDITS | PURCHASE

"One man. Seven women. In a strange house!"

Plot

Eastwood plays a wounded Union soldier who has been taken in at a Southern girls' school. The girls become curious and then sensuous. Eastwood's character takes advantage of the situation by charming several of the women. Jealousy sparks and the anger is ultimately focused at Eastwood who ends up suffering a few "mild mishaps" in the film. It was a smash in Europe but failed to ignite any excitement in the US.

Trivia
  • This is one of only two films to date in which the Eastwood character dies. Both Clint and director Siegel had to fight with Universal bosses to keep this ending.
  • The film was misleadingly promoted by Universal as a standard Eastwood western.
  • The title is an improvement over others contemplated by Universal, such as "Pussy-footing Down at the Old Plantation" and "On One I Walked".
  • This was the first film on which Bruce Surtees worked as cinematographer.
