"The scream you hear may be your own!"

Plot

This was Clint Eastwood's directorial debut and it delivers! Dave Garver (Eastwood) is a Carmel, California, disc jockey who gets a call every night from a mysterious woman listener who requests that he play the Erroll Garner classic "Misty." After breaking up with his girlfriend Tobie (Mills), Dave looks for action in the local bars and meets Evelyn (Walter), a rather high-strung but seductive woman who, he learns, is the mysterious voice that requests "Misty." The lustful pair adjourn to Evelyn's apartment and they sleep together with the understanding that it will be a one-night stand. Unfortunately for Dave, Evelyn is quite mad and absolutely refuses to leave him alone despite the fact that he has patched up his relationship with Tobie. Evelyn's jealous rage is at first suicidal, then quite murderous.

Trivia
  • The outline of the screenplay, as yet untitled, was written by a former Malpaso secretary, Jo Heims. It was turned into a shooting script by Dean Riesner, a Rawhide veteran who had done the same job on Coogan's Bluff.
  • Don Siegel appears in a cameo as the bartender. The first sequence Eastwood shot as director was Siegel's first as an actor. On one occasion Clint made him act his scene eleven times - then told the cam.mp3an to put the film in the camera.
  • Given complete freedom by Universal, Clint finished shooting four days ahead of schedule and $50,000 under budget.
  • The concert scenes were filmed live at the Monterey Jazz Festival.
  • Roberta Flack's song "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" shot to number one in the charts when the movie was released.
  • The film was the inspiration for Fatal Attraction and the TV series Midnight Caller.
