This was Clint Eastwood's seventh directorial assignment and it's a wonderful movie. Why this humane comedy failed at the box office is a mystery. Billy (Eastwood) is the owner of a Wild West show peopled with losers he has picked up in his travels. Eastwood is perfection as the New Jersey shoe clerk who dreamed a nostalgic dream and took action to realize it. The actor-director could have gone over the top by satirizing the very character he played so well in spaghetti westerns; instead he gives a sincere, realistic performance that silenced detractors who thought he could only play violent loners.

• When the Museum of Modern Art in New York put on a retrospective of his work in 1980 they finished by showing this film, one of Clint's personal favorites.
• This was Clint's first film since Kelly's Heroes not to be produced by Malpaso, since at the time the film was made divorce proceedings were under way and profits would have had to be shared with Maggie. Instead his Malpaso comrade Robert Daley set up Second Street Films to produce the movie.
