Gran Torino

Plot

Walt Kowalski, an elderly Polish American and Korean War veteran, fights a neighborhood gang. After thwarting the attempted robbery of his Ford Gran Torino by the Hmong gang, Walt develops a relationship with the Hmong Vang Lor family. The movie takes place in Highland Park, Detroit a neighborhood changed by immigration of the Hmong people.

Clint Eastwood describes his role as Walt Kowalski: "When 'Gran Torino' came along, it was a fun and challenging role, and it's an oddball story."


Trivia
  • Gran Torino was written by Nick Schenk. Nick learned the Hmong culture while packaging VHS tapes with the Hmong people in a factory in Bloomington, Minnesota.
  • Clint Eastwood was able to direct and star in Gran Torino because filming for Invictus was delayed until 2009.
  • Filming occurred in Michigan not Minnesota because of the generous tax credits offered by Detroit.
