Based on the John Carlin book Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game that Made a Nation. The movie relives the end of South African apartheid with a focus on the 1995 Rugby World Cup hosted in South Africa.
The Springboks, South Africa's white rugby team, are inspired to unite a nation divided by racial prejudice. Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) hopes that Francois Pienaar (Matt Damon) can lead his team to an improbable victory. Before the final game of the tournament, the Springboks visit Robben Island, site of Nelson Mandela's 27 year imprisonment.
