Three unrelated individuals survive near death events. These events change their lives and they begin to consider what happens after death (the "hereafter"). George Lonegan has physic abilities caused by a childhood surgery which damaged his brain. George can see people in the hereafter, but does not like his gift. Marcus Marshal listens to his twin brother's death through a cell phone. When Marcus finds Jason, he is already dead, killed by a van. French television journalist, Marie Lelay, survives the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. As she returns to life, she leaves another world, a world of light inhabited by the deceased.
Clint Eastwood: "There's a certain charlatan aspect to the hereafter, to those who prey on people's beliefs that there's some afterlife, and mankind doesn't seem to be willing to accept that this is your life and you should do the best you can with it and enjoy it while you're here, and that'll be enough. There has to be immortality or eternal life and embracing some religious thing. I don't have the answer. Maybe there is a hereafter, but I don't know, so I approach it by not knowing. I just tell the story."
