"An assassin on the loose. A president in danger. Only one man stands between them... "

Plot

In the Line of Fire pits Secret Service Agent Frank Horrigan (Clint Eastwood) against Mitch Leary (John Malkovich), a top CIA hit man until the agency cancelled his contract. Leary plans to get even by undertaking a suicide-mission assassination of the President. The twist is that Horrigan was present at J.F.K.'s assassination 30 years ago, and is ridden with guilt at having failed to take the fatal bullet. The result is a finely tuned suspense thriller.

Trivia
  • This was Eastwood's first film away from Warner Bros. since Escape from Alcatraz in 1979.
  • To director Wolfgang Petersen's surprise, Clint offered to do the scene where he hangs from a ledge above an alley for real, with only a harness and a wire set in the wall to protect him - there were no safety precautions in the alley below.
  • In the same scene, Malkovich improvised the sequence where he put the gun in his mouth.
  • In addition to the special effects placing Clint into archive footage of JFK, the same techniques were less obviously used to put him into footage of Clinton's presidential rallies to save on the cost of thousands of extras. He was also given the first digital haircut.
  • In the U.S. the film grossed over $100 million dollars.
  • The film was nominated for three Academy Awards, including John Malkovich for best supporting actor.
